Field Marshal Asim Munir, Pakistan’s senior military officer, is said to have made a number of harsh comments during a recent trip to the U.S., including a nuclear threat against India.
Threats to the Nuclear and Water Treaty
Reports say that the head of the Pakistani military said that if India ever posed a “existential threat” to Pakistan, the country would “take half the world down with us.” He made his threats much worse by bringing up the Indus Waters Treaty, which controls how the Indus River can be used. Munir said that if India built a dam that broke the pact, Pakistan would “destroy it with 10 missiles.” He also said that Pakistan has plenty of missiles.
Metaphors and Diplomatic Jabs
Munir utilized a number of metaphors to talk about the relationship between the two countries in his speech. He said that India was like a “shining Mercedes” while Pakistan was like a “dump truck full of gravel.” He said that if the two were to crash, India would lose. He also made fun of Pakistan’s ability to keep other nations in check, saying that their candidacy of President Donald Trump for the Nobel Prize was a smart decision. Munir was in the U.S. for a military ceremony and had a number of important meetings while he was there.
