Bareilly: In Uttar Pradesh, a state ruled by a woman, a woman Indian PPS officer says she was dragged by male colleagues and assaulted because she objected to alleged extortion by the traffic policemen in the name of regular checking.
The reported incident took place in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, in broad daylight on a busy road and in full public view. The woman officer, Kalpana Saxena, who was badly injured, was left on the road, bleeding profusely.
She was later shifted to hospital.
Saxena said, “I got a call saying some policemen in a Maruti car were stopping trucks and taking money from them. Immediately, I called my driver and took a car, not my office vehicle or they would have recognised me. When I reached the spot they recognised me and tried to flee but I held on to the car door. I caught the driver’s neck. He dragged me at full speed for the next 1.5 km and then pushed me off.”The Bareilly Superintendent of Police confirmed the assault and said that the three policemen, who are absconding, had been suspended and a case of attempt to murder had been registered against them.
He promised strict action.
The police have constituted three teams to search for and arrest the policemen and the district police have initiated criminal investigation against the three.
