members have also been of the opinion that politics could be an option for them if they wanted to “transfer power to the people.”
But there was also an element of uncertainty in the air on how this movement will progress. Unlike Thursday’s sharp drop in numbers, on Friday the venue had a strong crowd, with Team Anna’s
official estimate putting it at an 8,000 at its best.
Throughout the day, a number of groups walked in with banners and slogans, mostly local India Against Corruption (IAC) volunteers from different parts of Delhi. But the numbers sharply rose
only after Yoga guru Baba Ramdev made an appearance in the afternoon with his almost 1,500 strong cadres holding flags, most of them from Haryana.
Local labour and farmer leaders continued to make speeches on stage while Prashant Bhushan made allegations against UPA leaders like Praful Patel, GK Vasan, Sushil Kumar Shinde, Farooq
Abdullah and MK Alagiri. Having seen the drop in numbers, the team seems to have put in effort in mobilising people to make a visit to the ground. However, the desperation to make a point about
numbers was visible in the rhetoric emanating from the stage, with groups being made to parade around the stage before settling in.
Chandra Bhan, who works with an organisation called Lok Raj based in Delhi that works on labour issues, said “Prashant Bhushan invited me today (Friday) morning.” There was also a
VSNL/TCL Employees association who were here to talk about corruption in the private sector, and a 200-300 strong group from Haryana that works on social issues. Unlike the last two days,
the middle class and lower middle class from Delhi were present too.
Though Ramdev and Team Anna supporters mingled together, the rift between them was apparent. Mukul, a Ramdev supporter from Palwal said he was not there to support Team Anna.
“Team Anna is full of communists and anti-nationals. I am only here with Ramdev who has been forced to become a part of them because of media pressure. We do not believe in their targeting
of specific ministers. We have our own movement and cadre.”
However Ramdev did state on stage that he would return on August 9 to be a part of the Team Anna agitation. The weekend could also see the crowds swelling in numbers.
